The Influence of Media on Public Perception of Celebrities
How is it possible that certain individuals appearing on television, in newspapers, and on the internet – singers, celebrities, actors – become either very well-liked or are constantly criticized and pointed at? What influences our interest in names that appear so frequently in our lives? Modern media shapes social knowledge about known and unknown individuals to a very large extent. It is enough to appear with someone recognizable at a party, gala, or meeting, and hundreds of people will know who we are, perhaps even better than we know ourselves. The criticism often encountered influences public views towards people we don’t actually know and, funnily enough, will never know. We often don’t consider that people like Frytka, Tomek Jacyków, or Jacek Poniedziałek are media-recognizable faces, flesh-and-blood individuals with their own flaws and virtues, having both supporters and absolute opponents. However, making judgments about people with whom we have never exchanged a word can be quite incomprehensible.
